Foam Grades

foam_shapes4_250_1.jpgHow do we rate our different foams?

To assist in determining what type of foam is most suitable for your application, (polyurethane, polyethelene and polystyrene), has been divided into grades that distinguish them in terms of quality and hardness.

FLEXIBLE POLYURETHANE FOAMS are divided into three grades.

1. Superior Grade

This foam is of top quality and density. Seats and mattresses in this category are of HR quality. Seat backs are of high density, non HR foams.

Superior foams are guaranteed for 10 years when used in these applications. Superior grade foams are ideal for boat cushions, lounge cushions, dining chair pads, mattresses, and applications where the foam will be subject to heavy, prolonged use.

Medium firmness is suitable for applications that are going to be laid on, and firm for applications that will be used for seating. Seat backs are often preferred soft.

2. Premium Grade

This foam has medium resiliency and density. Foam density in this category ranges from 28 - 35 kg/m3. These cushions should last 5 - 10 years depending on the application and weight being supported.

Premium Grade is suitable for all applications but has a shorter life span than Superior Grade.

3. Standard Grade

This foam has low resiliency and density. Standard Grade foams are best used in low load bearing applications. They are not suitable for seat pads or mattresses (although much mass produced furniture and mattresses contain these foams).

This foam is ideal for temporary use such as camping, infrequently used seat backs, or packaging.

CLOSED CELL PE & EVA FOAMS are divided into two grades.foam_sheets.jpg

1. Standard Grade is of 25 - 30kg/m3 and is suitable for most common applications.

2. Hard Grade is of higher density and hardness. Its uses include industrial applications, high impact flooring and yoga blocks.

EXPANDED POLYSTYRENE is divided into three grades / groups for costing purposes. These grades are:

1. Standard 'SL' Grade EPS polystyrene sheet. This grade will be sufficient for most common uses.

2. Heavier, Hard 'VH' Grade EPS polystyrene board. This grade is used where a more hardy product is required, eg. pin boards and some concrete blockouts.

3. Profile Cut 'SL' grade EPS polystyrene pieces. This group includes items that will generally require a CNC cutter to produce. The shapes involved are more complex than straight cut sheets.

EXTRUDED POLYSTYRENE is made in various grades, however we carry the most popular one in stock. ND grade is suitable for most insulation purposes.
